MBA Jobs at Deloitte Consulting

Although the hiring numbers for many large companies are still in the low range one exception is Deloitte Consulting. They are currently recruiting upwards of 60 employees a week who have previous experience in the business and by the summer should see the total number grow to about 700. In addition to this Deloitte have about 800 MBAs and undergrads that have joined their ranks and are expected to offer the class of 2010 another 1,000 positions.

Deloitte has been aggressive in their growth by adding 4,000 professionals to their team in the purchase of the government consulting firm of Bearing Point at a cost of $350million after its bankruptcy. This growth and expansion has resulted in Deloitte being in the advantageous position of being able to offer their clients services in the information technology field, high-end strategy and just about any other consulting service a client might need.

Deloitte's billable client tasks have been running at 80% or more for the past year compared to an average of about 60% across the industry. Some experts speculate that this rate of work could lead to massive burn out among staff. Deloitte is one of the few companies that regularly hire professionals at a mid point in their careers compared to most others in the industry who are hiring seasoned experts. They are also known for recruiting through more than 70 business schools along a wide variety of programs such as Human Resources, Public Health and business majors.

In general, full-time MBA jobs seem to be on the rebound according to the MBA CSC with 34% of schools reporting an upswing in full time postings. Another positive sign is a decrease in schools experiencing a decline from 70% last year to about 48% currently reporting a decline in full time job postings. There is more positive news for internships as well where 62% of career service officers predicted all internship opportunities to be down last year compared to about 69% expecting either internships to remain static or on the increase for the coming year.

Pennsylvania's Wharton School is now seeing growth in the double digits of off-campus, full time job postings. Second year students are also increasingly accepting full time offers in greater numbers than last year including a good portion from recruiting companies on campus. Although some schools like Marshall's Keenan School has experienced a 15% to 20% decline in on campus recruiting these numbers may be misleading as some recruiting companies are contacting business schools directly requesting student resumes for their review.

MBA's definitely need to become creative in their internship and job searches. While many companies continue to hire MBA graduates they are often taking a different approach than in the past. It's important for all those seeking internships and full time jobs to keep at it in order to stay within the recruiters' radar. Although hiring is most certainly on the upswing there are also more applications being received for each job that is posted. Where a number of companies would see just over 300 resumes a day from MBA students and grads, today they are more likely to see upwards of 1,000. The opportunities are definitely out there, one just has to be persistent as most industry professionals are seeing an improvement in both full time positions as well as paid and non-paid internships.
